There it is again, the dreaded “software update” notification that pops up on the right-hand screen of my computer as I type away. It seems that almost everything I interact with requires a constant update. Whether it’s my smartwatch, smartphone, computer, tablet, apps, etc., I will inevitably receive a notification that an update is once again required. This constant reminder that something needs “fixing” makes me sometimes feel like I’m in a lousy relationship, constantly nagging me about when I’d like to do the update. How many of you reading this click “cancel” instead of “install,” thinking you’ll get to it later, but you never do.
I know that you and I are not the only ones that feel this way. It turns out that there are nearly tens of thousands of searches on Google every month inquiring how to disable updates. A 2017 Pew Research survey found that 14 percent of people never update their phone’s operating system. Almost 42 percent only update when it’s convenient or necessary. However, these updates exist for a reason, and the majority of these updates contain urgent security fixes or enhancements.
One of the significant reasons for updates is security fixes. Software and device developers create updates to “patch” up or fix vulnerabilities to fend off hackers and other similar offenders. Another reason for updates is improvements or enhancements. For example, software updates can also include new or enhanced features or better compatibility with different devices or applications. These updates can also improve the stability of the software and remove outdated features. In essence, the purpose of updates is to optimize and for that device or software to reach its fullest potential.
Scripture teaches us that God does the same for us. As our Creator, he’s constantly working to improve us and help us reach our fullest potential. Many times we feel that His updates are inconvenient or unnecessary. However, these updates are critical for you to improve and make the most of your life. So today, take the time to download what God has for you and be receptive to the next update that comes. Unlike man-made updates, God’s updates are custom-made for you and flawless for you to be the best version of yourself.
