Lately, my boys have gotten into the habit of tattling on each other. Usually, it’s about what one brother did to the other or what they didn’t do. They’re quick to offer up information that will take the focus off of themselves.
The other day there was another issue of tattling, and I decided it needed to stop. “Son, I don’t want you tattling on your brother anymore.” “Yes, dad,” he replied. Afterward, I felt convicted about what I said because it wasn’t exactly accurate.
As I took a moment to think about it, I clarified my request. “Son, let me take that back. If your brother is harming himself or others or endangering his well being, then yes, I would like to know. More importantly, you need to go to him first and try to help him.”
What I was trying to teach him is what all men must do, hold each other accountable. Scripture tells us we find strength, unity, and encouragement from a fellow brother. More importantly, a helpful rebuke can save our lives. It may not be pleasant at first, but it will be redeeming when coming from a caring brother.
