When I was younger, my parents decided they wanted us all to tour Europe. This trip was a lifelong dream of my mother’s, and they saved up until we finally made the trip. One of the countries we visited was Italy, and one of the most memorable city for me was the Pisa.
If you’re not familiar, Pisa is famous for “The leaning of the Tower of Pisa.” Started in 1173, The Tower of Pisa is the church’s belltower. Unfortunately, shortly after, when builders got to the third story, the building began to lean. They discovered the reason was that they laid the foundation stones on the soft ground consisting of clay, fine sand, and shells.
Regardless, the architects continued to build the tower in phases while simultaneously trying to compensate in other ways for the foundation issue. Over the next 800 years, the 55-meter tower wasn’t just learning but was falling at a rate of one to two millimeters per year.
This situation of a weak foundation reminds me of how we all need a strong foundation for the future, whether it be marriage, family, work, goals, or relationships. The architects should have done the difficult and started over with a new foundation because beginning with a strong foundation is imperative to building something enduring and structurally sound over time.
