Before marrying, my wife and I discussed expectations. This exercise was very healthy as we all bring a distinctive worldview into any relationship. We talked about how we grew up, expected roles and responsibilities, views on child-rearing, etc. Afterward, we made some tough decisions but found a compromise on everything.
One of those things was the expectation that I wouldn’t sweat the small stuff when it came to things related to our home. For example, I would differ to her what kind of furniture she wanted, decorations she picked out, and those kinds of things, and I would provide feedback.
For the first time, the other morning, as we’re making our bed, I realized something I’d never stop to think about—the number of pillows we have. When I finished counting, there were six. “Why do we need so many pillows? I only use one.” I said. She looked surprised. “Well, two reasons. The first is for supporting different parts of my body and help me sleep better; the other is they make the bed look appealing.”
As I thought about that response, I recalled all of the uncomfortable ways I’ve slept. I’ve slept on airport floors, in cars, in a soaking wet sleeping bag, in a hammock, on chairs, airplane seats, on desks, etc. The crazy part is those are the most memorable because I was on a mission with a purpose each of those times.
After piling up the last pillows on the headboard, I realized how unknowingly, as men, we can become comfortable with complacency. We live without a purpose or a mission and see challenges as inconveniences to be avoided. We mistakenly believe that our ultimate goal in life is to be comfortable and care-free.
Today I challenge you to ask yourself where you could use a little uncomfortableness. Remember, God does his best work when he moves us out of our comfort zone.
