Looking back, getting fired was one of the best things that’s happened to me professionally. But, at the time, it seemed like anything but a blessing. It was a couple of months before our wedding, I had very little money in savings, and I had recently purchased my condo. Also, add to this that my options for working at another agency were limited.
As I sat there contemplating what to do, I prayed and asked for direction. The more I thought about my situation, the more I liked the idea of starting my own company. For years I had talked about the many ways I would do things differently, better. The challenge was that I had nothing but a dream. I discussed the idea with my now wife, and she agreed to help and support the vision.
My days started with reading the word and then praying to God for guidance. I would then get up and walk out the door, not knowing exactly where I was going. I would use those walks to head over to a local coffee shop and strategize for the business. Every day I prayed for a miracle and God to bless my efforts, but for weeks nothing happened.
I then started to grow disheartened because now, married, I was living off unemployment, and despite my efforts, I didn’t seem to be making progress. I was losing hope, fast. Then, one fateful day I get a call back from Joe. His call was an answer to my prayers. He invited me to come in, we hit it off, and he became my first client.
This year we celebrate 15 years in business and now worked with over 100+ clients. I’m not going to say it was smooth sailing after that, but this story does remind me of how Jesus will sometimes send us out ahead of the miracle. He wants to show up in ways we can’t imagine, but we first need to head out in faith.
The passage for today illustrates this as when Jesus sends his disciples out ahead of himself, letting them know he’ll be with them soon. When the storms hit, they panic, and as he walks on water, they can’t believe it. But He lovingly reassures them and then calms the storm when He steps into the boat with them.
